Journals and Publications

Publications Specialising in Newts & Salamanders

  • Magazine - The only English language publication that deals exclusively with newts and salamanders.  Not only is it authoritative, it's written primarily by and for the enthusiast and professional working with newts in captivity.

The Rest

The rest of the publications on this page are general herpetological publications and only deal with newts and salamanders as a small part of each issue (although some issues may not contain any information on newts and salamanders).  Breck Bartholomew's has a very extensive searchable database of herpetological journals and magazines, and it's a great starting place if you want to find out which publications are relevant to you.

Although many of these journals are primarily aimed at scientists working with herpetiles, some are written by and aimed at hobbyists.  Most of the better journals aimed at hobbyists are not written in the English language.  Again, the list is probably just a sample of the publications out there, so if you have any additional publication information, please make contact.  Where a publication is noted as a society journal, the society's contact information can be found on the Societies Page.

  • Alytes - International Journal of Batrachology (English Language, sometimes French) - quarterly journal of the International Society for the Study and Conservation of Amphibians (also known as the International Society of Batrachology).
  • Amphibia-Reptilia (English Language) - quarterly journal published by the Societas Europaea Herpetologica. Professional scientific papers.
  • British Herpetological Society Bulletin (English Language) - published quarterly. Contains news, articles and papers. Published by the British Herpetological Society.
  • Copeia (English Language) - published quarterly by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. Scientific papers.
  • elaphe (German Language) - published quarterly by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Herpetologie und Terrarienkunde (DGHT), this publication often contains good hobbyist articles on newts and salamanders.
  • Herpetozoa (German Language) - quarterly journal published by the Austrian Herpetological Society.
  • Herpetological Review (English Language) - published by the SSAR, they describe it as "the principal news-journal of the world's herpetological community... Regular departments include Life History, Geographic Distribution, Husbandry, Techniques, Meetings, Conservation, Legislation, Recent Population Changes, and Book Reviews."
  • Journal of Herpetology (English Language) - SSAR's quarterly scientific journal. It is international in scope and covers all aspects of the biology of amphibians and reptiles.
  • Lacerta (Dutch Language) - published six times per year by the Dutch Herpetological Society, all articles are about terrarium animals and their husbandry.
  • Salamandra (German Language) - also published by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Herpetologie und Terrarienkunde. A more scientific publication than elaphe.
  • Sauria (German Language) - quarterly journal of the Terrariengemeinschaft
Berlin. Articles are all by people keeping and/or breeding reptiles and amphibians.
  • The Herpetological Journal (English Language) - scientific research papers published quarterly by the British Herpetological Society.
  • The Herptile (Englis Language) - published monthly by the International Herpetological Society (UK). It contains very good articles, although there aren't a lot dealing with newts and salamanders.
